A line of mushers make their way up the Yentna river on the first day of Iditarod 2013. The 1,000 mile dog sled race is an annual test of endurance and team work, pitting a musher and their 16 dogs against other teams and the Alaskan wilderness. March 3, 2013 Michelle Phillips and her team coming out of the woods near Puntilla Lake during the 2013 Iditarod. In dog mushing, men and women compete against each other, and women sometimes come out on top. March 4, 2013 Four-time champion Lance Mackey and his team near the top of Rainy Pass, the highest point on the historic Iditarod trail. March 4, 2013 In this timelapse, a musher's headlamp illuminates the trail over Rainy Pass underneath a faint Northern Lights display. March 4, 2013 Christine Roalofs struggles through the rutted trail in the woods along the notoriously difficult Dalzell Gorge. March 5, 2013 Matt Failor leaves the Rohn checkpoint after his 24-hour rest stop. Each musher is required to take a 24-hour rest stop somewhere along the trail, with the timing often crucial to a musher's strategy. March 5, 2013 A dog that was dropped in Rohn looks out the window of its plane ride home. Dogs are dropped by their musher for various reasons, from injury and fatigue to fighting and just not keeping up with the rest of the team. March 5, 2013 Anna Berington arrives in Nikolai with her injured dog Skwentna in the sled. The trail coming into Nikolai is some of the worst along the entire route, and it's not uncommon to see mushers arrive with broken sleds or even broken bones. March 5, 2013 A dog in Matt Failor's team naps in a light snowfall in McGrath. March 6, 2013 Ken Anderson makes dinner for his dog team at the Takotna checkpoint. Each checkpoint is different, with some providing barrels of hot water for teams, and others nothing more than a place to stop along the trail. March 6, 2013 DeeDee Jonrowe's team is ready to hit the trail again after spending their 24-hour rest stop in Takotna. March 7, 2013 Martin Buser tending to his dogs upon arriving in Anvik, the first checkpoint along the Yukon river. The 4-time champion lead the pack onto the Yukon but succumbed to fatigue shortly afterwards. March 8, 2013 A tired Martin Buser fights sleep inside the Anvik checkpoint. By this time in the race, many mushers start to cut rest in order to stay competitive. March 8, 2013. Jake Berkowitz passes by an old truck on his way into Anvik during the 2013 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. March 8, 2013 Musher DeeDee Jonrowe gets a little "help" hauling dog food from a young Grayling resident. Iditarod rules require mushers not accept any outside help. March 8, 2013 A musher makes their way up the Yukon river past the Eagle Island checkpoint. The river is a sparsely populated section of the trail. March 9, 2013 Norwegian rookie Joar Leifseth Ulsom arrives in the village of Kaltag, the last checkpoint on the Yukon river. March 9, 2013 Mitch Seavey, the eventual 2013 winner, arrived first in Unalakleet, the first checkpoint along the coast. March 10, 2013 4-time champion Jeff King charges into Unalakleet. March 10, 2013 Mitch Seavey's headlamp creates a streak of light as he crosses the sea ice before dawn near Koyuk. March 11, 2013 Ray Redington, Jr. and his team mush across the sea ice at sunrise. March 11, 2013 Aliy Zirkle gives a Koyuk resident a high-five as she leaves town. March 11, 2013 Aaron Burmeister mushes past an overflow on the sea ice outside Koyuk. March 11, 2013 Aliy Zirkle and her team arrive in White Mountain, 13 minutes behind leader Mitch Seavey. March 11, 2013 2013 Iditarod runner-up Aliy Zirkle in White Mountain, where overnight temperatures reached their lowest during the race, -20 fahrenheit. March 12, 2013 Mitch Seavey heats water for his dogs in White Mountain. March 12, 2013 Mitch Seavey leaving the second-to-last checkpoint, White Mountain, on his final push to the finish line in Nome. March 12, 2013 Aliy Zirkle lining up her dogs before leaving White Mountain. She left only 13 minutes behind leader and eventual winner Mitch Seavey.
